WTF is EFT and how can it transform my life?

Have you ever felt trapped in cycles of stress, anxiety or self-doubt DESPITE all the inner work you’ve done? (*hands shoot up*) Well, our core beliefs are engrained into our subconscious mind, nervous system and energy system.

Enter Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT)

EFT was a game-changer in my own personal development and healing. Of all the therapeutic coaching tools I use with clients, EFT is hands down one of the most profound and impactful.

For those new to it, EFT is often described as 'acupuncture without needles.' By tapping on specific acupressure points while addressing challenging emotions, memories, or limiting beliefs, we signal to the nervous system that we are safe. This allows us to disrupt old patterns, clear emotional blockages and re-wire the subconscious for new, empowering beliefs. It’s a holistic life coaching tool that integrates the mind, body, and subconscious—helping us break free from past wounds and move toward self-trust, clarity, and new possibilities.

Why EFT is Different (and Powerful)
Unlike traditional talk therapy, which primarily engages the cognitive mind, EFT works on a psychosomatic level—meaning it taps (literally) into the body’s stored memories and energetic imprints. Ever noticed how your heart races before a tough conversation? Or how your stomach tightens when you’re about to do something outside your comfort zone? That’s your body speaking and EFT helps us listen.

  • Rewiring the Mind & Nervous System – When we experience stress, our brain’s amygdala (our internal ‘fire alarm’) activates, triggering a fight-or-flight response. EFT helps regulate this, bringing the body back into balance and reducing stress hormones like cortisol.

  • Identifying Root Causes – Many of our limiting beliefs (e.g., “I’m not good enough,” “I don’t deserve love,” “It’s not safe to be myself”) stem from childhood experiences—some of which we don’t even consciously remember. EFT allows us to gently trace these origins and rewrite our internal narratives.

  • A Whole-Body Approach – Trauma, stress, and emotional wounds aren’t just mental; they’re stored in the body. EFT helps to physically release stuck energy, allowing for deep healing on multiple levels.

How EFT Works
During an EFT session, we tap on specific meridian points while verbalising a particular issue—be it a past trauma, a present stressor, or a future fear. This process clears energy blocks, much like acupuncture does, but in a way that also retrains the subconscious mind.

EFT doesn’t just help with emotional challenges; it’s also effective for:

  • Anxiety & stress management

  • Healing past trauma (including PTSD & complex PTSD)

  • Releasing limiting beliefs

  • Enhancing self-compassion & confidence

  • Navigating life transitions with more ease

One of my favourite integrations of EFT is Matrix Reimprinting, which takes the practice even deeper by allowing us to replace outdated subconscious beliefs with ones that support our growth. EFT helps clear the energy; Matrix Reimprinting helps install the new story.

EFT for Trauma & Emotional Healing
Trauma isn’t just about “big” events. It can be anything from being criticised as a child to experiencing a moment of shame in a social setting. It can also be what didn’t happen to us: for example, a child not receiving safety, nurturing or validation of their experience. The body holds onto these experiences, keeping us stuck in cycles of self-protection long after the event has passed. EFT allows us to signal to the nervous system that we are safe, that it can let go or that a particular event is now over —not just intellectually, but on a visceral, embodied level.

When an animal escapes a predator, it shakes off the stress response and moves on. Humans? Not so much. Or at least we did until social conditioning told us to stop shaking, yawning, crying or releasing in any of our natural, embodied ways. We store trauma in our cells, often without realising it. Through tapping, we complete the body’s stress cycle, helping us process and release emotions that have been lodged in our system for years.

Bringing EFT Into Your Daily Life
One of the most empowering aspects of EFT is that it’s not just a tool for deep therapeutic coaching sessions—it’s something you can use on your own. Whether you’re feeling anxious before a meeting, overwhelmed by self-doubt, or stuck in a spiral of overthinking, a few rounds of tapping can help bring you back to centre.

While 1:1 therapeutic coaching in Brighton if you are local (or online) offers a deeper, guided experience, incorporating EFT into your personal toolkit can be a game-changer for self-regulation and emotional resilience.
